Supporting PFC Justin Whitmire

PFC Justin Whitmire only 5 months 2 days younger in age than my daughter lost his life December 27, 2011 in Afghanistan, The vehicle that he was in was hit by an IED (Improvised Explosive Device). He had been in Afghanistan for 19 days.

The Westboro Baptist (Kansas based hate group) was in town to protest Justins funeral. Several were spotted although no protest was held. I'm pretty sure they had no idea the support that Justin & his family had on their side here in Simpsonville.

From the church to the graveyard is approx. 4 miles. The shoulders of the roads were filled for hours with military in uniform, veterans, adults, & children.

South Carolina Hells Angels there were hundreds of motorcycles.
We live a block off main street and that morning I heard the sounds of motorcycles continuely coming into town, I looked out my kitchen window and it was just amazing.

I went up to the Main Street about 11:30AM , the crowd grew larger and larger as time passed.

Clay arrived after work and the funeral ended at the church at about 2:30PM.

followed by the hearse and the view of Justins coffin drapped by the American Flag. When the hearse came by us we were standing next to a Marine and he began his salute.

The Marine remained at attention the entire time the line flowed by. There were many who had their tears under control but when they turned off Curtis Street onto Main St. and saw all those there to support them there were many tears.

We didn't know Justin , he graduated from the local high school. He could of went to Harvard. He choose to serve his country. A hometown boy. I recall one sign that really stuck with me last Saturday,

I'm slowly returning back to the blogging world.

I've become addicted to "Pinterest".

If you haven't been to that world of fun, believe me it is a MUST!

Two weeks before Christmas I noticed a stray kitten across the road.

Of course I instantly began saying "Here Kitty kitty kitty".

She began running towards me. (I'm all smiles)

I fed her a can of Fancy Feast.

All the while Clay is making sure I know we DON'T need a 3rd cat.

She was extremely thin, very friendly, & most of all she would allow me hold her like a baby.

I named her "Miss Kitty".

Do you remember "Miss Kitty" from "Gunsmoke"?

She'd return in the evening and I'd feed her and love on her.

I asked neighbors in the apartments across the road if

she belonged to them and no person claimed her.

Rebeccah & I slowly brought her into the house much to Clays dismay.

By the end of the week he said if we wanted to keep her it was okay.

Rebeccah renamed her "Matilda".After a week Clay & I changed her name back to "Miss Kitty".

For some reason "Matilda" just wouldn't flow off our tongue. (must be age LOL)

We've taken her for shots & deworming.

Four days after Christmas we took her to be spayed.

I can see she's gained weight.

The vet. said she is approx. 6-7 months old.

Weston likes her and she looks at him as though he's the most handsome guy around.

Clark, well he's a different story all together.

One moment he'll play with her then the next he's hissing and slapping her.

Ellie, the dog LOVES a cat.

She has been trying her best to become Miss Kittys friend.

The hissing has ceased on Miss.Kittys part, & she will allow them to touch noses together.

It's been since the 7th of November since I last posted. Oh MY!

Several things have been going on.

I was dealing with an extremely dishonest man who we paid to cut down a large tree, grind the stump, & prune another tree.

My daughter was sick, & after much bloodwork and a CT the Doctors determined she had mono.

I've managed to put my Christmas tree up along with lights and garland.

Last night I hung the ornaments. I thought it was best to wait a few days between setting up the tree and hanging the ornaments what with "Clark" our youngest cat had never seen a Christmas tree and I was a bit worried he'd attempt to climb it, and it'd tip over and break the ornaments. So far he's just curled underneath the tree and slept on the tree skirt.

My laptop has been giving me problems. Non-virus. I'm pretty sure I'll have to restore the laptop. I keep putting it off. I have a lot of items I need to back up. One reason I keep putting it off.

I have much to do around the house. As well as Christmas shopping, It may be after New Years before I can get back to my normal routine here.

Meeting Patti

After months of emailing each other & living only miles apart we met!

And I forgot to take my camera.Who? Patti of course. We have a common interest " Dale Midkiff ". Oh yeah cats, and vintage things too.

We talked about "Dale" (#1 topic of course).

She's just the sweetest, and I can't wait until we find time to have lunch together.

I bought these adorable plaid (tartan) nesting suitcases from Patti.

Clay & I stopped at a thrift store later that afternoon, they had a huge watermelon box filled with childrens books.

I REALLY dislike it when thrift stores dump their books into those huge boxes. It's so hard to search through those books when they keep sliding around. Let's not begin how bending over that box kills the lower back.

Yet, Clay & I did walk away holding our backs & searching in my purse for 2 ALEVE, & me holding all the books below for 25 cents each.

I did own about 3 of the books already, I just couldn't let them smother in that watermelon box!

I'm one of the very few that gets into Halloween.

Oh! I enjoyed it when I was little.

Going house to house filling my paper bag up with candy & fruit.

Today you have the groups who attempt to take the fun out of it for the children, claiming "Halloween" is this or that. I just want to raise my voice at these groups and say let kids have innocent fun while they can and you use that energy to do something productive with "your" life.

October 31st is my husbands birthday.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY" Clay.

I focus more on the 31st birthday wise.

That being said , I need to head to the kitchen and begin baking his cake.

Spell BOOK

I'm REALLY loving the estate sale company in Greenville that is open 6 days a week. Although Saturday was just my second visit, I was amazed at how quickly their items turn over.

I bought the spelling/activities book (4th Grade) for 50 cents.

I really like the front & back cover.

How I wish I could turn cartwheels and do leap frog like that again.

I'd have so many broken bones , I'd be pure pathetic.

The student "Ronald" was a very good student, ranging in scores of 94-100.

Although I did find what appears to be a spelling test with a low grade.

Oh well can't win them all.

Also a mini dictionary in the back.

You all know how I love a cowboy.

One red, one yellow. I have wanted one for sometime.

I decided upon the yellow.

Last Weekend Finds

My shelves are begining to overflow with my treasures.

I must either STOP going to flea markets, second hand shops (not gonna happen) or thin my collection out and list some of my treasures in my "Etsy" shop.(this might be a possibility)

I'm not one of those who can just go to flea markets, etc...& browse ( as in NOT buy anything) which is what Clay has the ability to do.

That is not normal. Is it? Perhaps it's willpower? If so, I have none.

If I see something I REALLY ~~like~~ love, it must come home with me.

Take for instance this past weekend.

Off to the Barnyard we go.

Clay does have a keen eye when it comes to items I collect.

I have teasingly told him many times

"I have trained you well."

We saw this Relpo planter.

It was a MUST have.

It is in such wonderful condition.

My favorite little booth is going out of business!

I'm so sadden by this.

I bought this Enesco shaker.

She looked so lonely.

I also bought this book from the same booth.

I hope ya'll will overlook my flaws in the photoshop department.

I can't grasp the detailed bells & whistles of the program.

Meaning the know how to cleaning up the cards once I scan them.

When I caught a glimpse of these cat cards I was so happy.

A Wonderful Find

I had seen a listing in Craigslist several times about an

Estate Sale Company located in a business area not far from me.

They sold items for people in state & of state who didn't care to have people come into their homes for the estate sale and/or they'd rather remain anonymous.

Saturday, Clay & I finally had the chance to visit this business.

The listings I'd seen had vintage Christmas ornaments,

retro schwinn bikes, ephemera, etc...basically things we both liked.

The first table we stopped at had oodles of ephemera.

Clay picked up a vinyl page protector filled with vintage cards.

Giddy is an understatement as to how I was feeling when I saw that batch of cards.

It had a little seal over the top to keep from opening it.

Oh Dear!

The price $2

I tried to peek inside to see the selection, and the seal tore.

I could see much better now! And WOW the selection was fabulous!

I couldn't believe - $2.00 for all these cards!

Fifty seven cards.

There are Get Well, Christmas, Valentine, Thank You, & more.

Some have glitter,some are embossed.

Most are from 1955 & 1956.

I've enjoyed reading the messages written inside.

They're all thoughtfully written.

I miss those days of cards arriving in the mailbox for various occasions.

Now folks seem to send only e-cards.

Cute, yes. Although not like the touch

of a paper card with a hand written note from the heart.

I hope you enjoy these few I have scanned.

Chenille Bedspead

This is the bedspread I was giddy over.

The design - chenille flowers.

The trim (dustruffle) is green.

It's suitable for spring or summer, it's very, thin.

I'll keep it on the bed perhaps one more week.

Then I'll pack it away until spring.

Clay talked the seller down to five dollars.

The bedspread had several large stains that I unsure would wash out.

After pretreating, washing, hanging dry.

Pretreating again, washing, & drying it came out of the dryer stain free.

A great day at the Jockey Lot Flea Market

A ride to Anderson's Jockey Lot on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

YES!

We had walked several aisles outdoors and I was considering asking Clay if he wanted to leave.

The tables we either empty or just of no interest.

Then suddenly I began finding treasures here and there.

A little baby planter.

I loved it's big ole' eyes!

This is diffently a keeper!

Found it in a little shop on the premises for $1.00

I wasn't sure what this storage container was.

I asked the seller and she said it was one of her "Wig Boxes".

It's in wonderful condition.

My Mom would of loved this.

I of course didn't need it, but I must HAVE it, so I bought it.

Unzip it.

It has a removable wooden dowel inside & the syrofoam head sits upon the dowel

Yes! Another Rand McNally book for my collection!

I've already washed it and have it air drying.

It is so pretty and vintage.

More treasures from our trip...

I tend to get over excited when I find "Rand McNally" books.

I found the books below at three different locations.

I've seen "Our Animal Friends" listed on Etsy often and was curious about the pages inside.

It's not a typical illustrated book.

I think I prefer the typical illustrated Rand McNally books.

We stopped at a two story antique mall.

One booth had plenty of vintage greeting cards to thumb through.

I spent plenty of time indulging myself there.

I scanned a few. Please feel free to use them.

(although not for use in sales such as on Etsy).

A few Treasures from on the road

Our little overnight trip this past weekend was planned to see Marty Stuart

Although we knew the area was filled with thrift stores, flea markets, & antique shops.

From the time we left home on Friday morning we were stopping here and there at all mentioned plus a few church yardsales.

I'm planning to put vintage suitcases in my daughters room for storage. She has a lot of vintage cameras and accessories , what better way to store them. I have a collection of suitcases in our bedroom for my various collections of treasures.

Below are several pieces I bought while on the trip.

The blue piece $2 , retro flower pattern ( it's a tiny case) $1.50 , traincase $1.00 , & the Samsonite piece on the bottom is in wonderful condition ( inside & out) $5.00

I found this hand stitched linen at an out door flea market.

I loved the little girl & boy.

We stopped at a tiny Farmers Market and inside it was various used items for sale.

I saw this baby book, actually the colors are what grabbed my attention.

So sweet!

There were a couple pages with writting but the majority are ink free.

Tucked inside the yellow envelope were the cards below.

At another thrift store they gave me this baby toy.

All toys were FREE.

(We did put $$ in their donation jar)

Their prices were very low.

I hadn't seen one of these in ages!

Marty Stuart 9-9-2011 Concert

Friday Clay & I took an overnight trip to Franklin, NC to see Marty Stuart in concert.

I have liked Marty's music for years.

Although I have never seen him in concert until last night.

Front row seats too.

I was very impressed. He's quite the entertainer ... SOOOoooo talented,

& his band the Fabulous Superlatives are as well.

pink trimmed coat with fringe, pink crosses & neck scarf.

They all came to the front of the venue to sign autographs after the concert.

Clay took this photo as I was talking to Marty.

Before the concert and today we were able to shop at a lot of thrift shops , antique shops, & flea markets. Franklin, NC , Dillard, Ga, & Westminster SC (our route) had plenty to choose from.

Books & Impatiens

This past Friday was a small estate sale just minutes from my house.

I was sitting on my front porch waiting on the Fed-Ex carrier

to arrive with a package that had to be signed for.

I could imagine all the "1960's vintage items" (just as it was wrote in the ad)

being bought as time ticked away...

There were boxes of photographs,childrens toy high chair and crib from the 60's, dishes ( no pyrex).

I found several items to buy including the books below.

I thought I'd photograph them next to my "impatiens".

I've never had a green thumb.

I know a tulip from a rose.

But this summer I wanted a flower for my front porch.

While Clay & I were shopping at Lowes, I walked over to the plants and looked around and came across this pretty violet flower.

I decided it was the one.

Clay & I had very little hope it'd live long with MY care.

That was early June and now it's September and it's doing fabulous!

My Mom would be so proud!

She always had flowers inside and outside the home.

She was just a natural when it came to plants.

The cute ceramic turtle planter belonged to Clay's granny.

She had bought it years ago at Goodwill.

Labor Day Festival & Giveaway Reminder

I hope you all had a lovely Labor Day weekend.

Our city had their yearly" Labor Day Festival".

Location: Main St.

We live one block from main street.

Friday evening just as the sun was going down we walked up to the festival.

We've decided that is the perfect time to go.

No major heat, the colorful lights, & more fun.

Clay & I spent a lot of time watching the kids helicopters.

That ride was a favorite of ours growing up.

When Beccah was little we'd ~~make~~ ask her to ride them

that way we'd get the chance to ride them with her.

The "Round-up" was a favorite ride of mine at amusement parks when I was a teenager.

If I were to ride it now I'd never survive!

Although not a balanced diet food, I did buy a sausage dog with peppers & oinons.

I convinced myself it was okay since I only do this once a year.

Our car has been in the shop for repairs for weeks. Let me stress that...WEEKS!

Which has left me with no transportation. It was finally taken out of the shop today, only to have the truck put in for new shocks. On the bright side this work will only take less than 24 hours. I've been a real homebody during this time.

I borrowed my daughters car and ventured out to that.

I bought several vintage Rand McNally Junior Elf books, Little Golden Books, &

Osmond Banana Bread!

My favorite recipe has always been the

"Olive Larson's Banana Loaf"

we make this a lot and it doesn't last long!

Mix Together

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup butter or shortening

1 teaspoon vanilla

3 very ripe bananas

1 cup flour

2 eggs

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

Bake 350 degrees for 1 hour

I spent many hours as a child tucked away in my room or in the backseat of the car on a long trip with a coloring book on my lap & a new box of crayola crayons sitting beside me, the 64 count box with the built in sharpener and the fancy silver and gold crayon. Now there are every color under the sun in crayola crayons to choose from.

I came across this little coloring book awhile back at a newly opened antique mall.

I loved the simple pages and have scanned a few for your pleasure.

Feeling a lot better

Thank you all for your sweet comments , e-mails , kind words & prayers.
I'm feeling a lot better. I've been out to eat a few times and even went to the grocery store. If I don't push myself I believe I'll be back in the swing of things by the end of this week.

I love being at home, I always have verses working outside the home. I was born to be a homemaker and love my title. Although laying in the bed day in day out for these weeks looking at the same walls OH MY! All I could think of was what I could be doing. Do you know there is absolutely nothing on TV worth watching.(Thank goodness for my Dale Midkiff movies and series). TV seems to be all talk shows, court shows, & reality TV, Not a fan of any of those. In our home we have 2 TV's and rarely use them, I dust them more than they are flipped on. But I must have them for when Dale Midkiff appears on TV.
I'm ready to get back into my regular routine and back to blogging again.

I'll be scanning a early 1950's coloring book.
I'll have those pages up soon.

Where's Mary??

Sick, off and on sick. That's been me.
I have been reading my blogging friends posts and commenting here and there when I can.

My blog has been put on the back burner until I feel better. I actually became ill back in April with "e-coli". The antibiotics the ER prescribed didn't do what they were supposed to do the first go round. I'm dealing with this bacteria again and this time it's worse.

Clay had a severe case when we were vacationing back in the early 90's. The hospital thought it was appendicitis. He didn't want to be hospitalized out of town and had me drive him hours back home. They admited him once we arrived and soon learned it wasn't appendicitis but e-coli. He remained in the hospital for 7 days. He was in horrible pain.

Not feeling too well as I type this post. I think it's time to crawl back under the covers.

Clay was off several days last weekend. Each day we went to estate sales, thrift stores, basically we second handed it nearly all weekend.

Below are a few things I bought.

This toy high chair is missing it's food tray.

But it's perfect for sitting my daughters American Girl doll in. Addie, has been sitting in a rocker in the living room which over shadows her. She is going to look adorable in this.

26th Wedding Anniversary

Today is Clay & my 26th wedding anniversary.

We actually met the summer of 1979,began dating in the Spring of 1980,
and married June 28th 1985.

He's my rock. When asked once what his hobbies were he said he didn't have hobbies. He spent his time with his family.He enjoyed doing what we enjoyed. That's the truth. He's never been one I have to pick up after. I'll open the dryer to fold clothes and he's beat me to it, even after a 10 hour work day.

In fact I tell him he must outlive me, I doubt I could funtion without him. Should I outlive him I doubt I could ever find another man as wonderful as he is.(I don't plan on going looking).
My Mom adored him. She'd call here many times when she was ill, wanting only Clay on the other end of the phone to talk to & pray for her.

He always spent time with Beccah from birth until she got to the age "parents are embarrassing". They rode the tandem bike up town and would sit on the benches by the railroad tracks and watch traffic as they drink their coca-cola. It didn't matter if it were matchbox cars or Barbies he was on the floor pretending right along with Beccah whenever she wanted.

I know "God is Good", because he blessed me with a good husband.

Clay gave me this postcard as my anniversary present.
They sell these where our daughter works downtown Greenville. It's an exlarge wooden postcard embellished with silk ribbon. They sell an assortment, but this one was my very favorite.

Moonlight & Roses

Since Clay's work has allowed him unlimited overtime, he works every Saturday.
I do mean EVERY Saturday.We're very thankful he has a secure job, ( he's been with the same company going on 33 years this coming October), but he really needed a break.
Thankfully, he took this past Friday and today (Saturday) off.
We've spent a lot of time at Estate sales & antique shops.
We also discovered a nice size flea market.

Late Friday I considered having a yardsale on Saturday.
The heat convinced me otherwise.
While going through things I came across another box
of Ty Beanies that my daughter no longer wanted.
Before my mom passed away, my daughter & parents collected beanie babies. Of course this was when my daughter was about the age of 7 years old,(they collected for 3 or 4 years).

I listed these in the "FREE" section on Craigslist. I had 51 emails asking for them. I read through each and found the perfect person. A lady will be placing each beanie in a shoebox along with other items for "Operation Christmas Child".

Clay & I were on our way to a few antique stores
this morning and we were able to drop off the beanies.
Lainey is the sweetest lady.She showed me handbags she crochets and put in the girls boxes. They are amazing. She crochets them out of plastic bags ( ya' know like from Target, grocery stores, etc...) I asked her if I could take a picture to post on the blog, she was sweet to let me.
Don't you know those little girls face brighten up when they see those handbags?! Not only is she recycling, but bringing joy to others in the process.

Twenty years ago today "Ana Rebeccah" was born.
Our one & only child.

How she recieved her name.

I went to high school with a girl named Ana.
I don't remember very much about her. What I do remember: she was blonde, very pretty, & always very nice to people. I thought her name "Ana" was beautiful. I had always said if I had a daughter that would be her name.

As for her middle name, Clay & I just could not decide upon one. Then one day I was looking through the TV guide, & there was an advertistment insert for an Ashton Drake doll " Amish Blessings Rebeccah". That was the name "REBECCAH". It was Amish, the people I admire and the "h" at the end made it unique.

Weston has turned into a very "needy" feline.
Yes, I know he has been through a lot.
But I swear he loves that plastic cone on his head.
We did remove it several times to clean and he became the most fussy feline.
The moment we rewrapped the cone around his head he became ~~calm~~ needy.
In our lap, inches from our face. He was the oddest guy.

His now "little" tail.

Today was his 13th day of the second ampution of his tail.

We went to his vet this morning.

She said he had healed nicely.

She removed his stitches and he no longer has to wear the cone.

Clay & I are happy about that.

I seriously believe Weston misses it.

He's hidden in our bedroom closet most of the day.

Hopefully life will be back to normal...let me lean over and knock on wood.

My friend Dee in Texas sent me this cute vintage valentine. She found it in a library book. I imagine someone was using it as a quick bookmark and simply forgot it was in the book when they returned the book to the library.The girls name on the back is "Martha".

My mind wanders a bit and thinks did Martha give this to her soldier years ago? Did she later in life marry him? Oh the story that could be behind this little valentine.

Poor poor Weston

Memorial weekend began as a normal weekend here.

That is until Sunday afternoon.

"Weston" was suddenly missing.

He's an indoor boy, due to being declawed in the front.

He had been missing unnoticed for about 2 hours.

We checked all known hiding places in the

house, we knew it was time to begin the outdoor search.

As I looked out the backdoor there he was sitting on the top back step.

I opened the door and he slowly slipped in.

As the door closed & I reached to latch it I had no idea his tail was

caught between the door and the floor.

That is until I heard his screams and he bite into my foot.

I couldn't seem to understand what was happening

for a few seconds.

I knew he was screaming and my foot was in pain.

Then suddenly I was brought back to reality

and was able to unlatch the door.

I knew Weston had to be in pain, he kept pacing the floor.

He soon calmed down and appeared to be okay.

Monday rolled around and he was

uneasy if you touched his tail, which was understandable.

Then evening came and we heard the

worst growling.And saw him running wildly

through the house. Once we caught him, it was just...too horrible to describe.

We rushed him to the Animal Emergency Hospital.

The DR. told us she could give him pain medication

and we could wait until the AM to take him to our vet or they could

do the procedure there, but part of his tail would have to be amputated.

Clay said Weston had been through too

much to transport him back and forth and

we'd just allow them to do the procedure.

Of course I'm crying.

I know it was an accident, yet I did this to him and he was in such pain.

He's 8 years old and that puts him at

a greater risk when under anesthesia.

Thank the Lord, he did remarkably well.

That is until late Wednesday.

He wore a flexible cone collar to help keep him from biting at his tail.

We had taken the collar off for a few moments

since it was itching his neck.

just a split second he snapped at his tail

and ripped the stitches out.

We rushed him back to the Animal Emergency Hosptial.

Too much damage was done and futher ampution was needed to his tail.

Since he was able to reach his tail while wearing the flex collar,

they replaced it with a hard plastic cone collar.

He's on pain medication and a antibiotic.

Adding to matters he bite one of the workers there and she had to go to the DR. and be put on antibiotics and the bite had to be reported to the health dept. They explained to me that is standard. And the health dept would be calling me about the bite. I did recieve a phone call and they will call me again in ten days.

I've asked Weston if his 2 hours of freedom was worth all this.

Warning! A Lot of Photos Trip to Franklin NC & Osmonds

I bought tickets this past January to

see "The Osmond Brothers"

in Franklin May 21st.

I've lost count how many times I've seen these guys in concert.

They always put on a fabulous show.

The town of Franklin is filled with antique shops & we soon learned thrift shops.

It was amazing to say the least.

We had reservations at the cutest little motel.

The kind you can back your car right up to the door, no climbing stairs.

"Carolina Motel"

It was neat & clean as could be.

The temperture outside was hot, when we entered our room it was very cool.

The air conditioner wasn't on.

Walking over to the window facing where the cabins were , the cool air was blowing in from the pine tree covered area. ( our view )

After resting a few minutes, we decided to head out for the antique shops.

"The Attic"

This little shop was in the upstairs of a building.

The prices were unbelieveable.

EXTREMELY low.

I walked right past this Post Station. Clay called me back to point it out.

I had visions of this holding all my vintage cards in the letter slots.

At the cost of over $2000, I had to just keep my dream at a vision.

!Luggage!

I loved this piece.

The 3 piece set was $65.00

I have 2 pieces ( train case and medium piece)

my oh my this piece would be like the cherry on top!

Vintage /retro table and chairs.

4 chairs and table were $250

We both were starving,yet kept going to antique shops.

Finally I told Clay we HAD to eat because he began to feel a bit dizzy.

We had a nice meal at "Fatz" and returned back to the hotel to rest & shower before the concert

. We had an hour to spare

I located a Goodwill about 2 miles from the motel.

We should of just remained at the motel.

It took us a good 20 minutes to locate Goodwill.

This Goodwill marks their items as though they are selling them on Ebay.

And we were almost t-boned by a big truck.

And last we ended up on the wrong road to head to where the Osmonds were performing.

It's a good thing we could laugh at all this.

We actually had time to spare once we arrived at the Smoky Mountain Performing Art Center.

It's a very nice venue.

Not to big , not to small.

We had front row seats which were really nice.

While waiting for the show to begin we walked

back to the ticket office and bought tickets

to see Marty Stuart - Sept 9,2011.

I've loved his music forever, although have never seen him in concert.

We have front row for his show too!

I spoke to several ladies I talk to on facebook who are Osmond fans.

As I sat down, I heard someone say "are you Mary? I'm Dee." Oh My Gosh.

Dee and I were in a Yahoo chat group years ago with other Osmond fans. We'd play Osmond music, talk about the Osmonds, etc..

I then met her at an Osmond concerts in Tennessee & Myrtle Beach.

I was blow away to see her again and then she pointed that Rachel was there. She was in the yahoo chat group. I met her at the same two concerts.

Needless to say I was just tickled over seeing them again!

After the concert the Osmonds were in the lobby signing autographs and talking to fans.

I could't wait to meet Jimmy The last time I had seen Jimmy was in 1975 in Allentown, Pa. He was 13 years old then and now he is 49 years old. (Then I had seen him onstage only.) He was the only Osmond I had never met. And wouldn't you know it. My camera battery went dead.

Clay pulled out his cellphone, now I have a picture of Jimmy & me on Clay's cellphone. He doesn't text, etc...it's there forever. LOL

Late Sunday morning we headed home, although making sure we stopped at an outdoor fleamarket we'd past on our way into Franklin.

The prices on the vintage items were amazing. LOW.

This booth was filled with "Pyrex" and kitchen gagets.

I bought this cute chick shaker at that booth

I found this letter holder with Merry Christmas stensiled

on it for $1

I love "Dick & Jane" books.

These readers are from 1961.

I couldn't pass them up and they are in wonderful condition!

Clay added a fan to his collection, and another funeral home thermometer. The glass needs replacing, and we have plenty of assorted glass sizes which can mend that in moments.

Vintage Sewing Envelope Images for your use

The last week of April I posted about vintage sewing patterns.

< My newest passion in collecting >

I ran across a yardsale a week ago where the couple were moving.

The lady had several batches of patterns rubberbanded together and each

batch was $1.00

I thumbed quickly through each batch and saw

about 5 or 6 I wanted to purchase, although they were in different batches.

I honestly didn't want to purchase about 30 patterns to own those 5 or 6.

I asked the lady if I could pay her $1.00 for the 5 or 6 I wanted.

She told me I could have ALL the patterns for $1.00

I tried to explain I REALLY only wanted the 5 or 6, but she said she REALLY wanted to get rid of them and was happy with the $1.00.

When I arrived home I saw there were actually more patterns I liked and only a few from the 1980's I had no use for.

I've scanned a few and have LOTS more to scan.

Santa Pitcher and "What is it?"

Two of my favorite yardsale treasures I bought this past Saturday.

The Santa pitcher I bought at a church sale.

It has a couple flaw areas, but not tragic in my opinion.

I love those rosey cheeks

I'm not 100% sure if the item below

is a planter, or perhaps it's missing a top and is something else.

There are no markings or sticker to help identify it.

As usual the vibrant colors caught

my eyes while it sat on the shelf at Goodwill.

It's not large enough to be a cookie jar.

If it had a top it could be a trinket container.

Although it appears to be a planter.

If any of you in blog-land know please let me know.

I love illustrated childrens books.

To be more precise, "vintage" illustrated childrens books.

More so for the vibrant colors.

This weekend a seller at the fleamarket had several to choose from.

Sadly most had covers missing, and several were only covers.

That's right no pages, just covers.

Those little books had a rough life.

I did however rescue a few that were in fair condition.

I bought "My First Dictionary" primarily

for the illustrated front & back cover.

I love how the children are dressed

in their vintage clothing marching along.

Also, the book reminds me of readers from when I was in elementary school.

Vintage Sewing Patterns Bring Me Happiness

I honestly didn't need to indulge into a new collection.

However it slowly happened.

"Vintage sewing patterns"

I stopped in front of a huge box of patterns at a thrift store.

I began looking through what appeared to be hundreds of patterns.

I've seen on Etsy where folks have used pattern envelope covers,

and pattern pieces to create greeting cards & tags.

Such as "Cherry's Jubilee"

created a beautiful greeting card from a pattern cover.

After discovering just how beautiful the vintage images are on the envelope covers,

I instantly became addicted to collecting them.

DIY Six Pane Window Frame Project

I bought this six pane window frame at a church yard sale for two dollars.

It needed minor cleaning.

Mainly the glass needed scrapping with razor blades.

The wood had all the distressing it needed from it's previous wear and tear.

The hardest part was deciding which photos I'd place in each pane.

Two panes are currently empty.

I'm still looking through photographs ....

I used an old bingo card, buttons, black photo corners,

vintage easter card, etc, to embellish

the photos within the panes.

Large glue dots adhere the items in place.

"Mary's Little Corner of the World" tag hangs from window pane.

Dust Bunnies

Okay I'll admit it.

I have dust bunnies.

There I said it.

It's not that I don't dust, vacuum, or mop.

I do these things several times a week.

I'll confess I have a obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)

when it comes to my home being clean & in order.

These dust bunnies are waging a war against me.

I clean every nook and cranny,

& the next day there they are taunting me once again.

I know we all have our things we collect.

How often do you dust.

Do you use anything special?

I use a 3" paint brush on all my little items.

It gets into the corners where other items can't.

The sale was happening inside as well.

She caught my eye the moment we walked through the door.

We have a heated mattress pad on our bed.

Weston LOVES it!

He's an extremely cold nature cat.

Even in the summer time, the pads of his feet feel like he's been walking on a cold surface.

Please don't tell him I called him a cat,

he actually believes he is human. (We allow him to think he is, why argue.)

He takes over Clay's side of the bed in the AM when he has left for work.

I woke up this morning to find him just like this...

The flash was annoying him and he slowly slipped from underneath

the covers and rested near the pillows for a facewash

"Mother, I suppose you're happy YOU woke me up, for what?

Do I look happy?

No!"

I've decided the wall around the mantle needs to be rearranged.

~~I've~~ Clay has taken all the frames down, filled their nail holes & touched up all areas that needed paint.

A few of the frames I'm reusing , such as the flower frame below.

I'll use it with a photo of Clay as a child.

But felt the flowers would be too "girly".

I decided to paint the frame white and then distress it.

I loved the color that came through while distressing.

Vintage Samsonite Streamlite Luggage

I was ready to jump for joy when I saw these beautiful

marble green Samsonite Streamlite luggage pieces

at the church rummage sale this morning.

(Growing up my parents had

a set of deep blue marble color pieces & I LOVED those.)

There were two ladies who had their eyes on the luggage too.

I could hardly contain myself.

I glanced over at Clay, & seriously I believe he thought

I was going to shove my way

in front of those ladies & grab the luggage pieces.

I was thinking...

" Don't buy them."

"You don't want those pieces."

"Walk away."

All those statements directed towards those ladies.

Then my chance came...as I was keeping my eye on the

other lady who was eyeing the luggage

I heard Clay ever so quitely say

" it's clear now Mary."

In a blink of an eye , I was at the luggage,

hands touching it.

Hey that's the rule!

"Hands on, it's yours until you take your hands off."

The little sticker on top of the ladies o 'nite regular piece

was marked $5.00, there was no price on the ladies train case.

I thought if the first was $5.00 , the train case must be the same.

Clay suggested I ask one of the ladies working the rummage sale.

I asked a young lady behind a table & she asked another

lady, she gave me the best news! They were selling the luggage

as a set which was a total of $5.00 !

I thought I needed smelling salts there for a moment...$5.00?!

One of the other ladies working the sale placed them

with her items behind the tables making sure no person

could take them while I continued to shop.

The sale had also be going Friday.

I wish I had know.

Now to decide what collections

I am going to store in the luggage....

Vintage Vase & Lamb Bank

I detest grocery shopping.

Therefore before I make my

scheduled trip to the grocery store ,

I treat myself with a trip to the thrift store.

This morning I saw the cutest vase

hidden among dishes, mugs, & other glassware on the top shelf.

I reached my arm ever so slowly among the

glassware and wrapped my fingers around

the vase and slide it out.

There smiling back was the cutest little boy

wearing a graduation gown ,

holding a diploma, and the

prettiest pale blue tulip

in full bloom behind him.

Seriously wouldn't you smile right back

if you saw this?

I forgot to show you my little lamb bank.

I bought it at

Buncombe Antiques Mall

about two weeks ago.

I adore it's little blue eyes.

It'll be for display only.

There's no way to empty coins out

aside from shaking them out.

Books & Pyrex

The sun is shining and the temperature is perfect.

Although I'm a homebody I just couldn't stay inside today.

I've had a nagging migraine and thought perhaps if I went out and breathed in fresh air the migraine might just leave (wishful thinking).

First stop "Mr. K's." This place has a huge selection of books (dvd's , cd's & vinyl). Clay isn't too fond of the store. He doesn't like to read. Allow me to correct that. He reads his bible daily, devotional , bible study , & the chicken soup books. But to go into a book store or music store that spells B.O.R.I.N.G. to Clay.

Poor Clay suffered about 45 minutes and I walked out with one First Little Golden Book "The Three Little Kittens". I assured him the illustrations were fabulous!

On our way home he stopped at a little thrift store.

I found suppies for distressing, such as sandpaper,paintbrush, etc... less than $2.

I have several books made by the Whitman Company. "The Rifeman", "The Lennon Sisters -Secret of Holiday Island", & several "Donna Parker mysteries."

In the housewares I spied two red refrigerator pyrex dishes.

They are so cute and tiny.

measurements 3" high x 4" long x 3.5 wide.

They have a little wear to the red around the top edges, aside from that they're in good condition.

Sadly I still have the migraine.

At least I thrifted ( is that a word?) & had

a good time today with my hubby, that's what life is all about.

A few things I picked up at the flea market.

The little red Quiz booklet is filled with questions & answers.

It belongs to the 1949 Milton Bradley Company game

"Go to the Head of the Class".

The hardback book with illustrated cover

title, "Round About".

The cover immediately caught my eyes.

Although trying to hold a conversation with the seller

as she slopped and sucked on melting ice cream

that was barely hanging onto a wooden stick was getting the best of me.

She was going to snap my very last nerve if I had to

stand there and watch her slop & suck much longer!

Seriously people... MANNERS?

Let's remember to use them.

Lastly, needle book.

It's missing 2 needles on the inside.

Aside from that it's in very good condtion.

Dark Picture Frames Distressed to Blue

I bought three pictures frames at Wal-mart months ago to hang in our bedroom.

I really liked the design on the frames, although the dark color I never liked.

The frames with photos have been hanging on the walls and I finally decided they needed to be distressed. I have a lot of white in the bedroom, then it hit me, BLUE! We have a blue shelf I distressed back in the summer that I have white milk glass vases displayed on.

The frames would be perfect in the same color blue.

Supplies

One can white spray paint, two can's blue spray paint.

sandpaper, white candle, twine, frogtape, laytex gloves, clean old white cotton sock, & newspaper.

Ready. Set. Go. DISTRESS

I taped up all areas with newspaper that I did not want paint on.

I used twine to string up the frames to low tree limbs

and began spray painting with white spray paint.

I gave each frame one coat.

The temperature was just perfect outdoors.

The paint dried fast within hours.

Next, I rubbed down each frame with the candle.

This will protect the white coat when I begin distressing.

I now begin spray painting the frames blue.

I wait 48 hrs before I begin to distressing the frames.

I wait this time period to distress due to the wax between the coats of paint.

I wear laytex gloves also because the wax can cause the top

coat to smear onto your skin.

I now bring out the sandpaper and tear it into sizes about half

the size of the palm of my hand and fold that in half.

I begin rubbing the sandpaper on the frames edges

lightly and white paint begins to appear through the blue.

If I rub too hard I'll go through the blue & white

and will reveal the dark brown of the frame.

I want the white to be revealed as though it had been

painted white ages ago & the blue paint is wearing away.

After I am finished I use an old white sock to rub the

frame down, and I use a 3" paintbrush to

dust it with to remove all the lose paint I sanded off.

"J" asked to see photos of the frames on the wall since they have been distressed.

Yesterday we headed out to a few of our favorite thrift stores in Greenville, S.C.

I even agreed to go into the Miracle Hill Thrift Store. This certain one I nicknamed "Ebay Hill Thrift Store". I normally don't go into this store but once or twice a year because they price a lot of their items as if they were selling on Ebay and even add notes to their items"as seen on Ebay selling for X amount". I don't go into a thrift store to pay an excessive amount of money for an item. I expect to pay more for an item yes on Ebay or if I go to an antique shop where collectors have their items for sale.

Now I'll began a positive note telling you about the antique store " Olde Faithful's Antique Mall "we ventured into, in Taylors,S.C.

We had actually passed this store many times, and each time Clay said he wanted to stop and stroll through this store one afternoon.

Yesterday was the afternoon. I am so happy he stopped.

They had so much to look at. My eye's felt as though they were going to pop out.

I located some childrens books within the first booth, then Clay said there were vintage cards in the next booth. I told him not to be teasing me or I'd have to smack him right there, because teasing about vintage cards just was not a nice thing to do.

He swore he wasn't teasing me.

I walked around the corner and there sat a box filled with vintage valentines!! I was in complete awe.

I stood there and looked around and saw more cards, vintage childrens books, handkerchiefs, more cards, OH MY! It was in HEAVEN! I was thankful I was the only person at the booth at the time. I don't know how polite I could of been sharing that box of valentines as I thumbed through them.

I took a photograph of the box, it was just the begining of things to come.

These are the first of many more baskets of vintage hankies. I looked for childrens theme hankies. Such as cowboys, nursery rhymes, etc, didn't come across any. Perhaps I overlooked them. More reason for returning and shopping again.

Those who love vintage clothing, you would be crushing in this store. They had some of the sweetest dresses, hats,shoes, suitcases, seriously this is a shop so many of you all would go crazy over.

I can't wait to return and am thrilled it's less than a half hour drive.

I have a crush on a blogspot I just discovered.

They are located in South Carolina, YES! South Carolina, the same state I live in and actually just a hop,skip,& jump from me. Could it get any better? Well heck yeah it does. They have an online store, and in that store they sell vintage diecuts, vintage flashcards,vintage circle tags, and so much more. They have an Etsy shop! I KNOW it just keeps getting better. Wait...there is more, you can follow them on facebook,twitter, & there is a gallery to view. Seriously I am crushing over this site.

Daisy D's replica vintage postcards

I found these scrapbook postcards in my stash this weekend as I was looking for a few items. I had completely forgotten about them. I bought them at the CK Scrapbook Expo in Charlotte, N.C. (2006)

They're "Daisy D's Company". The reverse side of each postcard has a stamp & postmark and a yellowing to give it a vintage look. There are also matching 12"x12" paper & stickers to use as embellishments.

Distressed Lingerie Chest (LOTS of photographs)

I have had this lingerie chest completed since December. It's the chest from this post. I filled in all the holes where the previous knobs (hardware) had been & I sanded the dresser. I decided to use white spray paint. When I sprayed, the paint would just sit on the chest in dots and in various places run.

I allowed the area I sprayed to dry & then resanded that area. Next I primered.I gave the primer plenty of time to dry. I then brought out the cans of white spray paint. (click to enlarge photos)

Time to distress.

There are a lot of curves and resessed areas on this chest which makes it perfect for distressing.

I always wait for a 40% off coupon every other week in Hobby Lobby’s online ad to purchase their knobs. But as luck would have it their knobs were 50% off when I went in to shop. They have a wonderful selection of knobs. Also The Anthropologie store has the most beautiful knobs (hardware). Sadly the closest stores to me are Charlotte (@2HRS), Myrtle Beach (@ 3.5HRS), & Atlanta (@3HRS).
I choose the black knobs because I have an item hanging on the wall with the same knobs.

Darn, I forgot to take a photograph of the inside of the drawers. I came across two rolls of drawer liner at our local "Family Dollar Store" that screams "Shabby Chic". The rolls are pale pink with itty bitty pale green & white flowers.

Looking at the liner you can almost bring yourself to believe you smell a hint of vintage dusting power or perhaps a hint of cashmere bouquet talcum powder shaken lighly from it's can.

A little minature rose filled with memories

This minature rose was given to me

from a secret sister in sunday school

class back in the spring of 1999.

I later learned my

secret sister was Lori Jill.

A very sweet woman with

a sweet sweet spirit.

Little did she know I had no green thumb.

I can't even keep artificial flowers

looking decent.

I put the minature rose into Clay's hands.

He planted it outdoors.

Basically he dug a hole dropped the little rose in the hole, added water, & pushed the dirt over it.

The little rose has

returned back to life year after year.

Had I did that, it would have never survived.

We were in the process of moving to our home here on College St., in doing so we were deciding what plants we Clay would transplant from Cox St. I knew I wanted to bring my minature rose.

Clay dug it up and transplanted it in the front yard.

We both had no idea if it would survive.

As each spring rolls around the minature rose blooms, this year it's 12th.

It reminds me of Lori Jill and the wonderful

Sunday School class we had Temple each time I walk over and look at it.

Mid-century awning

Clay found this little awning at

"Burnley's Consignment"

in Fountain Inn, S.C.

for a only $25.

It took him a little elbow grease,

few cans of primer, white paint,

and red paint for the trim to have

it looking just as he wanted,

and took no time to install it over

the back bedroom window.

He didn't like how the sun beamed in

through the sheers, and this solved the problem.

I really love it because of the mid-century look.

Valentines has passed

...yet a little birdie flew into my life.

Actually after we ate at

Cracker Barrel one evening

I walked over to their clearance section.

There it was hanging out by itself

on a shelf,the cutest little bird.

It had a little spring to it's flight

and even a slight ringing of a bell.

I knew instantly I was going to adopt it.

Barnyard Finds

The Barnyard.

There are times I like going there & there are times I don't care to go.

It's one of those flea markets you can count on 75% of the same dealers/sellers week after week.

I like flea markets where nearly every table has new sellers with a lot of good junk they've dug out of their attic, or scrapped up from who knows where and they want to get rid of it.

Clay had ventured out to the Barnyard a couple weeks ago and came across a new seller who had vintage cards and childrens books. He bought me two valentines, but wasn't sure which others I might like because the man sold an assortment of vintage greeting cards. All his cards were $1 each.

This afternoon we headed over there and I looked through his box of cards. I did find four I really, really liked and purchased. His books, well none really caught my eye.

I'll post scans of the other three cards in a later post. The valentine below is one I did buy from him. I just adore it. (Click on it to enlarge and save.)

As we looked from table to table I saw a table with a few childrens books.

"The little RED WAGON" caught my eye. The inside binding was broken. But the illustrations are the cutest. Especially the older lady!

Most sellers want $3-5 for a book like this, that was what I was expecting when I asked. Was I surprised when he said .50 I actually spilled my money on the floor, bills & all trying to get the change to him. LOL Pretty good for a book from 1950!

American Pickers "A big Thank You to Kelly"

Kelly over at "My Dear Trash" began a

giveaway 12/23/2010 for the first season

of American Pickers on DVD.

Clay & I LOVE the American Pickers.

We don't have cable and have to watch the

episodes via the internet after they've aired on TV.

1/31/2011 , Kelly selected the two winners & what

do you know, my name was one of the two selected.

The DVD set arrived today & we are

two happy pickers in training LOL

Thanks so much Kelly we'll enjoy this set many times over!

The Osmonds

I know some of you all remember the Osmonds.

I discovered them in 1970 and have been a fan ever since.

My parents took me twice to the Allentown Fair in Pa. to see them in concert when my dad was stationed at McGuire Air Force Base N.J.. After those two concerts I practically lived in the roads going to their concerts.

Those were the best times traveling with other Osmond friends.

I haven't seen the Osmonds perform since the mid '90's.

But that's changing. Three of the brothers Merrill (my very favorite),Jay, & Wayne will be performing in May about 2 hours from here and I've already bought tickets. Front row!

At first Clay didn't want to go. He's seen them a couple times already. But he's changed his mind. Not so much about seeing them, but going to where they are performing. You see there are a lot of antique shops in that area. So actually it all works out really well.

Something I've wanted since I was a little girl

I was very spoiled for Christmas.

My presents were given early.

A trip to California and a new laptop.

The only thing I could think of that I wanted

was a vintage silver brush vanity set.

I had showed one to Clay at an antique shop months before Christmas.

Although I actually forgot about showing it to him.

He had planned on going back to purchase it for me as a

Christmas present, but never found the time to make it up that way to the store.

Ever since I was little I wanted a three piece vanity set.

I recall seeing the little plastic sets in bright pinks, blues, and assorted colors.

For the life of me I don't know why I didn't ask for one,

I know my parents would of bought me a set.

Last night we took a trunk load of donations to my favorite thrift store.

After dropping them off we went inside to ~~look~~ shop.

I found a couple non-vintage cards and was about to pay for them when

a vintage silver plated brush set caught my eyes in the display case.

I was all giddy.

The salesclerk took it out of the case for me to look at.

(She couldn't take it out fast enough in my opinion)

"I'm buying this" I told the clerk.

And the most amazing part it was only $14.

I KNOW... AMAZING!

The vanity set at the antique shop was $75.

I walked out of that shop happy as could be.

Finally my very own vanity set.

Thrifting & Antiquing

After Christmas Clay & I rode up to the Asheville (N.C.) area.

We had a dusting of snow here in the upstate area.

And as usual when you reach the

N.C./S.C. state line there is a

drastic difference in weather.

They had a LOT more snow.

When we returned home our car

had that icky white look.

We stopped at a Goodwill store in the Fletcher area.

In the parking lot was this car.

I had Clay take a photo of it.

Check out the bumper.

Yep made of a log.

On the ride back home we stopped

at the Antique shop in Travelers Rest, S.C.

This place is AMAZING.

As I told Clay, "I could stay

in here ALL day" his reply

"I thought you did" LOL

I did buy several vintage cards & table runners.

This booth had very reasonable prices.

I looked, touched, looked, touched,....

This booth had quilts,linens,sheer heaven!

Picnic baskets & feather pillows

We had a stove in our first home this size although not this type.

I did however have these one piece

metal cabinets in my kitchen at our first home.

The sink was made into them.

I miss them so much.

They were my grandma's.

This brought back memories.

I'd love a fridge like those below.

Early Surprise in the Mail Today

Clay came walking through the back door with mail in hand late this afternoon.

One piece of mail was a large white padded envelope.

He was smiling & said "Dale-Friend mail".

I took the envelope.

My Dale Midkiff-friend Heidi had sent me something.

What on earth. I knew it wasn't Dale,unless she had made him a flat-Dale.You know like "Flat-Stanley".

I opened the package and saw red with a note.

(NOTE)

I opened the red bag, and there was cute heart tissue.

I s l o w l y unwrapped the tissue.

OH. MY. WORD.

The cutest vintage valentines were hidden in that heart tissue.

There are two that are

almost 5"x6" and they are

mechanical.

Three postcard size valentines.

Actually one is a postcard, with a

1 cent stamp attached and looks to have been postmarked in 1925

Seven diecut valentines

I adore the little girl on the moon.

I believe all these are Carrington Co. cards from the 20's through 30's.

is my absolute favorite day of the year.

I love all the beautiful cards.

I've been captivated by them since

I was in first grade where I enjoyed

my first valentine's class party.

White Christmas in the South

We typically have ice storms in the winter here in South Carolina, with very little snow.

Today, Christmas day we were blessed with snow!

Our backyard late this afternoon.

This is actually my second white Christmas in 50 years.

I was about 5 years old when I saw my first

white Christmas. We're supposed to have

an accumulation of a few inches.

We'll see...

'Twas the night before Christmas

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,

In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

Sweet Little Nativity Set

I was thinking about the little plastic nativity set that my mom would set out every Christmas.

It was very simple.

I'm sure many of you all had the same nativity in your home.

This morning I decided to check ETSY for one.

I was tickled to pieces to find one with the original box.

It's amazing how this nativity set can bring back so many wonderful memories of Christmas past.
